This project was born out of the observation that many secondary school students lacked confidence when it came to speaking in public, particularly in French, which is not their mother tongue. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, the Institut français du Luxembourg invited the French association Eloquentia to set up a training programme in six Luxembourg secondary schools. The 84 pupils taking part in the course were given the opportunity to learn how to express themselves respectfully, attentively and sympathetically. Five separate subjects were covered during the course: classical rhetoric, stage expression, creative writing and slam, vocal technique and breathing, and personal and professional aspirations. Young people who wanted to could take part in the eloquence competition organised at the end of the course. At a final presentation at the Lënster Lycée International School, some of them took the floor in public to express themselves – in the form of their choice – on subjects such as “failure”, “relationships”, “equality” and “courage”. They showed great talent, eloquence, poetry and creativity.
