With English becoming increasingly important as a global communication language, it’s essential for children to use it effectively. Many secondary schools in the Grand-Duchy have enhanced their standard English classes with English theatre options or extra-curricular activities. To celebrate and encourage this development, FEST asbl has been organizing the Festival of English-Language School Theatre since 2018. The fourth edition took place at the Rotondes in February 2024.
This event offered secondary schools the opportunity to perform short one-act plays in English for the public over a weekend. It allowed students to act in English at an established venue and see their peers perform, experiencing English spoken by both native and non-native speakers. Additionally, there were theatre workshops led by experienced professionals, where students could learn about various aspects of the performing arts, such as playwriting, movement, and basic acting skills.
Empowerment was evident through the joint effort and each student’s individuality contributing to putting together a show and bringing it to the stage in front of a larger audience. Students supported other groups by watching their shows, creating synergies, and finding solutions together.
